Recently Had Your Tooth Extracted? Make Recovery Easy with These Tips!

Anyone would, as much as possible, want to save their teeth from being removed and it is worth noting that permanent teeth are actually meant to last a lifetime. Unfortunately, several situations make extraction a necessary procedure. Some of the most common reasons are extensive damage, overcrowding, risk of infection, or the spread of infection. Instead of placing the patient’s overall oral wellness at risk, dentists would recommend the removal of a tooth to prevent a particular issue from worsening.

Patients at Aqua Dental Loft who are considering to undergo a tooth extraction procedure are assured that our team will make the process go as easy and comfortable as possible. To do so, we will provide some instructions before the patient leaves our practice to help make their recovery highly successful.

Extraction Aftercare Tips

Swelling

Patients are more likely to experience swelling in 48 to 72 hours since it is a normal and common response after most surgical procedures. The affected areas usually include the cheeks, mouth, neck, and eyes on the side where the extraction took place. Bruising on the said areas may also be experienced. There is no need to worry since this will gradually disappear after seven days.

Swelling can be minimized by applying an ice pack against the extraction site in 15-minute intervals. And once it reached its peak, moist heat should be used on the area in 20-minute intervals to help it subside faster.

Pain

Everyone already expects that there is some level of pain and discomfort after an extraction procedure. The good news is, it can be managed by taking a prescription and over the counter medicines. Patients are advised to follow the correct dosage and intake schedule as provided by the dentist and the product’s manufacturer. However, if the pain persists or worsens, contacting the dentist is a must.

Eating

Days following the extraction, patients are highly advised to stay hydrated by drinking six to eight glasses of water per day. Maintaining proper nutrition is imperative for the extraction site to heal. Patients are advised to consume soft foods at first to avoid accidental trauma to the extraction site and to avoid additional oral discomfort. In about a week, patients would then be able to switch back to their regular diet.

Oral care

It is still highly advised for patients to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing, flossing, and rinsing. But they should also make sure to avoid the extraction site not to disturb the formation of a blood clot.

Aside from the tips listed here, make sure to take note of the ones provided by the dentist in person to make your recovery process after a tooth extraction easy and comfortable!
