In some dental situations, the best course of action may be to remove a tooth. This is most often done when a tooth is causing problems for other teeth or when a tooth is too severely damaged to be salvaged. The experts at Aqua Dental Loft strive to make the tooth extraction process as easy and as possible so that a patient can focus on improving their oral health after the procedure is completed.
After making the necessary preparations beforehand, we will carefully remove the tooth from its socket. In most cases, the patient will only experience minimal pain at most; however, it is common to feel some pressure in the area during this time. Once we have successfully removed the tooth, the immediate goal is to form a blood clot at the extraction site. We do this by having the patient bite down on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes. The patient must then be very careful not to disturb the blood clot in any way. For this reason, we generally advise patients to avoid using a straw, rinsing vigorously, smoking, consuming drugs or alcohol and exercising intensely for at least 24 hours after a tooth extraction.
It is normal to experience some swelling after a tooth has been removed. This problem can be addressed by using an ice pack on the outer cheek near the extraction site. Most patients are able to continue with their usual brushing and flossing practices just 24 hours after the procedure. If you experience intense pain or heavy bleeding at any time following a tooth extraction, you should contact our office immediately.
In addition to standard teeth extractions, Aqua Dental Loft also offers wisdom teeth removals. A person’s wisdom teeth, which are also called the third molars, usually develop when the individual is in their late teens or early twenties. While it is possible to ultimately keep one’s wisdom teeth, this is quite rare due to the extreme angle at which wisdom teeth grow, as well as the lack of space available for them inside the mouth.
Wisdom teeth removals are usually more extensive and involved than most other types of teeth extractions. Most patients who have their wisdom teeth removed will require about a week’s worth of recovery time. The best way to expedite the process is to get plenty of rest, consume lots of fluids and chew only soft foods during this time.
